Human Subjects Research Training
UNC Charlotte subscribes to CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) for online human subjects research training.
Important Notes for Researchers New to UNC Charlotte:
- Researchers new to UNC Charlotte can access this guide for information on how to create a new CITI account affiliated with UNC Charlotte, how to affiliate an existing account with UNC Charlotte, and how to add needed training courses to your CITI account.
- Note: Failure to complete these steps prior to submitting a research application may cause delays in application processing.
- CITI offers full support for the current versions of four browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, and Safari. For additional compatibility details, search the CITI Support Center.
Human Subjects Research Training Requirements:
- All research team members (Investigators, Co-investigators, Responsible Faculty, Research Associates, and Research Assistants) are required to complete human subjects training.
- Researchers who have completed training within the last four (4) years through the CITI program OR at another institution may provide documentation to the Office of Research Protections and Integrity of this training to fulfill this requirement.
- Researchers who have not completed any human subjects training will need to complete at a minimum, a CITI Basics Course (Social & Behavioral, Biomedical, etc.).
- Depending on the details of the research as proposed in the protocol application, the Office of Research Protections and Integrity may recommend additional training. As an example, an Investigator conducting research with children may be asked to complete the “Research with Children” module in addition to completing the Basic Social & Behavioral human subjects research course.
- For CITI certifications to be populated into Niner Research, new investigators must follow these instructions. After your CITI ID is successfully associated with your Niner Research Profile, any CITI training you complete will automatically be logged in Niner Research.
- Note: Do not confuse Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training with human subjects research training. The CITI courses have similar course names. RCR training does not fulfill the human subjects training requirement.
